Julia Rieth and Detlef Stiebich are the duo behind Stiebich & Rieth, their eponymous leather goods brand based in Hamburg. For Monaco Marine — Merci la mer, they came up with an exclusive design, entirely handmade, which features marine-inspired details. They invited us in their atelier.

In 2012, the designers behind Stiebich & Rieth began to craft the first models of their line of leather goods. Their credo? Only use traditional techniques to develop and experiment their prototypes. As a result, they never use computers or drawings to create their bags. "All of our prototypes are made of leather, right from the start of the production process", explain Julian and Detlef. This method is completely unique and resonates with their philosophy, which consists in advocating a return to the purest stage of design, by working with their hands. "It allows us to check every step of the process and make sure that every bag is comfortable", they add.

The designers also wish to craft their pieces from the best leathers, which are tanned with a vegetal technique. Originating from Italy, France or Spain, they are the key to perfect bags, which acquire a unique patina over time… This is the case of the bag they designed exclusively for Monaco Marine. "We wanted to come up with a versatile style, which can follow the wearer in every getaway imaginable", they add. "We paid attention to every detail of this little shoulder bag, from the colors of the leather to its outside pocket, and even the length of its adjustable handle". A carefree and all-terrain handbag, offering a great freedom of movement at any time.
