Model Liya Kebede creates ethical and artisanal pieces

A trip to her native Ethiopia was enough for Liya Kebede to decide her to launch her clothing brand... In 2007, the model met a group of weavers who could no longer make a living out of their activity: this happy coincidence gave her the impetus needed to concretize her project, which she already had in mind.

She then created Lemlem, whose name means "to blossom" in Amharic (one of the native languages of Ethiopia). The brand focuses on highlighting local know-how and helping people to sustain their activity. "By employing traditional weavers, we are trying to end their cycle of poverty, while preserving their craftsmanship and creating modern pieces, comfortable and easy to wear," she says.

Her signature style consists of pieces thought of as holiday clothes, designed in New York and made in Ethiopia, which are crafted from cotton harvested in the region and embroidered with colored threads. Among her must-haves: wrap dresses, tunics or skirts, all very colorful and whose patterns revisit traditional prints. Good news, they will soon be available in our Monaco Marine - merci la mer store.
